PR BI-176 - The path of the lamias

From the charming fishing village of Mundaka, we will climb to Katillotxu mountain to descend afterwards by the valley of Lamiaran, where, according to popular tradition, a group of Lamias (Basque mythological nymphs) used to live.

Start of the route: Portuondo (MUNDAKA)

End of the route: Mundaka

Maximum height difference: 130 m.

Distance: 5,4 Km.

Aproximate time: 2 h.

The route starts in the center of the village of Mundaka.

Here we take the route to the beach of Laidatxu. From the beach, we continue using the protected road shoulder, until we arrive in Portuondo Camp Site, which we must cross following the path downhill until we reach the stream that separates Mundaka from Sukarrieta village. A nice natural bridge remains on the left, Portuondo, an old shelter for Romans and Corsairs. We climb to the slope until we reach the main road to Gernika-Bermeo, which we cross by a marked path a few meters above, and then descend to the right until San Anton farmhouse, where we will take a local road on the left hand, which will lead us to Ilumpe farmhouse. Behind this farmhouse we will find a new path to go up until we reach a forest trail where we will turn to the left. A few meters ahead we'll reach the local road of the neighbourhood of Munitiz. Here we turn to the right, where some arrows will mark us the path to Katillotxu mountain.

Following this path we well reach the vicinity of Abaroa Goikoa farmhouse, where other old arrows will lead us to the right through a wide forest trail towards Katillotxu. This trail will take us through the north hillside of Katillotxu to a small water tank. Then we will find a new cross where we must take the trail in front, which leads on another crossroad. Here we'll take the road on the right to get the neighbourhood of Arketa-Aranburu. We go down this road among nice farmhouses until we reach a new cross, where we see an old bus stop of the rural school, and where we will turn left. Going on this road we will reach Solaguren farmhouse and to a new cross with four ways, where we'll take the second on the right hand which will take us to the ruins of the ancient hermitage of Lamiaran. After the hermitage we will go down among old walls until we reach another cross of three ways, taking here the one in front of us, in parallel to the main road and leading near the petrol station in Mundaka.
