Mundaka and his story

  • Turismo Mundaka

Mundaka, at the mouth of the river which bears its name, is the anteiglesia of the merindad of Busturia. As its origin is very old and unknown, it has long been assigned foundations based on fables and legends.

Mundaka, whose first name was Munaka, was the first vote and seat at the General Meetings of the Lord of Bizkaia. It is therefore interpreted to be the oldest church in the Lord.

Among the first news from Mundaka is the palace of Altamira. There lived at the end of the eleventh century the Infanta of Scotland, the mother of the White Lord, the First Lord of Bizkaia.

The town had mainly been engaged in fishing and maritime commerce since ancient times (it had been the seat of a fishing brotherhood). Since the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the anteiglesia has been modernized and transformed, creating a new source of income: tourism. It was especially since the 1980s, with the rise of surfing throughout the Basque Country; and especially in this municipality, thanks to its left wave, one of the best in the world.

From Mundaka I welcome you, we want to open our doors to show you the cultural and tourist information of our country. That's a charm, because it's located in the Busturialdea region within the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve.

We invite you to visit and enjoy the experience.

Greetings.

Sorne Arano Rubio

Mayor of Mundaka
